Sharing Dr. Seuss With the Community
Domtar’s paper mills produce thousands of tons of rolls, reams and skids every day, but it is easy to lose sight of the link between those tons and the people who use them. Johnsonburg’s EarthChoice Ambassador Program, in partnership with the Quality Promotions Committee, sought to renew that connection.
J1 has produced paper for many notable titles, including Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and the first-edition release of Harper Lee’s Go Set a Watchman. When employee Bryan Geer learned that a large run of 60# Husky Vellum was going into Dr. Seuss books, he wanted to know where and when to find them. He and his fiancée are expecting a baby in September, and he wanted to give the baby something that Daddy had made. “To see what you’ve made helps you value your work so much,” he said.
Working with Domtar Sales, Dr. Seuss books were secured for the entire J1 team. The EarthChoice Ambassadors and Quality Promotions Committee also recognized the opportunity to share the team’s accomplishments with the community. Seven mill employees visited Johnsonburg Elementary to present the books and read to kids from kindergarten through third grade. Seuss books were also provided to schools in nearby Ridgway and St. Mary’s.
Mike Rapp, an employee of eight years and grandfather of two, believes it is more important than ever to tell the story of the stories Johnsonburg helps write. “People should know that we make book paper here; we should know more about the books we make. We take a lot of pride in what we do here.”
