Mill Initiatives Improve Performance

Across the company, engaged employees are finding new ways to work more effectively and sharing that expertise with others. These efforts show the tangible benefits of Domtar’s EDGE™, our Pulp & Paper division’s philosophy for success. This one-division approach addresses how we work together to succeed and stay ahead of the competition. Several mills have used a variety of tools to improve performance and generate millions of dollars in annualized savings. These are just a few examples:

Espanola

Espanola Mill has engaged in three continuous improvement initiatives in the past year, yielding more than $1.5 million in annualized savings and new ideas for operating at top performance. The mill team has put this system of tools, processes and metrics to work in three areas of the mill: recaust, the paper machine winders and the chlorine dioxide plant.

Kingsport

Kingsport was one of several mills to focus efforts on the use of fresh lime. After analyzing past operating data, the team saw opportunities to decrease consumption of fresh lime. The group used process mapping, cause-and-effect tracking and other tools to generate more than $1.2 million in annualized savings.

A second initiative focused on reducing size press breaks and recovery times. Using process mapping and statistical analysis, the team reached its goal of reducing size press breaks to 0.33 per day in six weeks out of seven in early 2016.

Hawesville

Hawesville also worked to improve production and efficiency related to the lime kiln. In 2015, the mill team analyzed operations and identified several areas of improvement. Compared to 2014, the mill reduced its lime make-up by 15.3 pounds per ton.
