Windsor Develops Technology Tools to Inform Forest Users

Mirador website

Ten years after first receiving Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) certification for its forestlands, the Windsor Mill in 2015 launched Mirador, a new online forestry management tool. The new site was introduced at the annual forestry convention of the Southern Quebec Forestry Association.

The mill has posted summaries of its forest management plan on Domtar’s website for 10 years, with maps showing the areas where annual projects are scheduled.

‘‘Forestry operations coexist with other land uses, and we were looking for a more interactive way to provide this information,’’ said Patrick Cartier, Forestry and Inventory Coordinator.

The mill was inspired by two virtual forest tours it had previously created with Terraspec, a local start-up ( These virtual tours of hybrid poplar plantations and commercial thinning operations effectively bring the forest to you.

On the Mirador site (, visitors can access information about the forest management projects on the 400,000 acres of Domtar’s owned forestlands in southeastern Quebec. A map shows municipal and logging roads as well as the projects scheduled for specific areas. Short videos explain other useful features, such as geolocation.

‘‘While the information was originally intended for hunters and fishers, Domtar sees Mirador as an opportunity to communicate with other land users, such as hikers, bird-watchers, municipal employees and neighbors. We have presented the platform to our hunting and fishing clubs and the response has been very positive,’’ added Patrick Cartier.
