Second annual Health Fest a success!

Ginny Johnson, Improvement Systems Coordinator & Administrative Assistant, Nekoosa Mill

The 2nd annual Health Fest was held in Nekoosa on August 22, with more than 280 employees and their families in attendance. For this year’s event, the Nekoosa Wellness Team joined forces with Nekoosa Coated Products (NCP), our neighbor and customer for more than 30 years.

Among the objectives of the Health Fest were to increase the visibility of the health and wellness resources in our community and surrounding areas, and to provide a variety of health screenings and educational materials to our employees and families. To that end, more than 35 local vendors and businesses showcased their products and services relating to health, wellness and safety, which was beneficial to both the employees and the businesses.

Employees and their families were offered a variety of health screenings, including an oral cancer screening, posture evaluation, blood pressure and oxygen checks, and hand strength testing. Attendees could see and feel the difference between 5 lbs. of fat and 5 lbs. of muscle, and compare a clogged artery to a clear artery. Free samples were available from many businesses, and local fitness centers promoted their facilities and offered discounts and trial memberships.

There were maps of the local biking and hiking trails, and information on alternative medicines such as acupuncture, herbal remedies and bioset. Employees were also able to meet with a local honey producer. One of the busiest events was the free 10-minute massage. For those who worked up an appetite, lunch was available from Subway and Hidden Creek Kitchens, with both offering a great selection of sandwiches and salads. People could also enjoy a smoothie to help them cool down on this hot day.

Every child that attended was given a goody bag that included a bottle of juice or water, fruit snacks, and a ticket for a chance to win a wellness gift basket. A coloring contest was also held and every child who turned in their colored picture received a prize.

The Health Fest is a testament to the value of small communities coming together to benefit many. We couldn’t have a successful event without their support. We received many positive comments from the vendors and employees, along with some great suggestions for next year! Both NCP and Domtar are looking forward to Health Fest 2013!
