Dragon boating for wellness

Chris Gilliam, 1st Assistant, Fine Paper Mill, H1 Machine, Hawesville Mill

Dragon boat racing is one of the fastest growing sports in the world, and Hawesville’s employees were some of the first in the tri-state area to ride the wave.

Each team consists of 20 paddlers, and one drummer keeping the paddlers in unison as they race the 300 yards to the finish line. The Hawesville “Dragons of Domtar” team members were: Judy Craig, Leah Merritt, Trevan Merritt, David Price, Johnnie Snyder, Mariah Snyder, Harold Smith, Joey Watkins, Steve Henry, Richard Basham, Ben Basham, Debbie Troutt, Joe Smith, Roman Shutt, Whitney Sides, Kayla Sides, Vince Somody, Terry Somody, Janel Gilmore, Jackie Gilliam, Garrett Gilliam and myself as team captain.

This was the second year for the race in Owensboro, and also the second time the Dragons of Domtar competed in the race. Nearly 20 teams raced this year. Although the Dragons of Domtar did not bring home the 1st place trophy this year, we did have a great day of teamwork, friendly competition, exercise – and a fun day of Chinese culture.
