Inauguration of CelluForce plant

Providence Cloutier, Communications Advisor, Windsor Mill

The first nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) demon-stration plant in the world, CelluForce, was inaugurated on January 26. Joe Oliver, Federal Minister of Natural Resources; Alain Paquet, Quebec Minister for Finance; John D. Williams, Domtar President and CEO; Pierre Lapointe, President and CEO of FPInnovations and Jean Moreau, President and CEO of CelluForce were all present for the occasion.

Over 200 guests and several members of the press attended this memorable event, held in front of the CelluForce plant, which is located on the grounds of Domtar’s Windsor Mill.

The guests were invited to visit this innovative facility and to learn more about the NCC manufacturing process through discussions with CelluForce employees. The latter were extremely proud to share their new work environment with everyone at the ceremony. Later in the day, an open house was held so employees from the Windsor Mill could explore the site, which is usually closed to visitors.

The plant, which began operations last September, produced its first kilograms of dry NCC on January 17. The team had to overcome several stumbling blocks to reach this milestone but managed it thanks to a concerted group effort. It is worth noting that none of the equipment used to manufacture the NCC had been previously used to process this unique material.

The plant is operating at a reduced production rate during the equipment optimization phase but product marketing efforts are going strong!
