“Always prepared” to help our community
The Hawesville Mill recently helped 20 Boy Scouts get their pulp and paper merit badges. The Scouts were from Troop #76 of Owensboro and Troop #163 of Louisville, KY. One of the leaders of the latter is Mike Wedding, Vice-President of Operations at Nugent Sand & Gravel. We got to know Mike through our efforts to identify and develop lower cost chip sources and, when we learned about his involvement with the Scouts, we told him we would be happy to help his boys out with this important step in their program.
Fine Paper Mill employees who volunteered for this community initiative were: Avery Bolton, Process Engineer; Dan Marquis, H1 Crew Leader (who has been active in scouting many years); and Co-ops Whitney Sides and Joseph Smith. Other employee volunteers were our General Manager Steve Henry; our very own “eagle scout” Matthew Pfaadt, Electrical and Instrumentation Reliability Engineer; David James, Procurement Forester; and Roman Shutt, Bleached Pulp Mill Co-op. Roman developed an excellent presentation that incorporated all the requirements of the pulp and paper merit badge – so special thanks to him!
The all-day event included viewing and discussing the history and benefits of paper, a lesson on how paper is made, an overview of the Hawesville Mill’s sustainability efforts, a tour of the H2 paper machine, and a hands-on activity where the Scouts got to make their own sheet of paper.Share
